Copra Meal / Coconut Cake

Copra meal (or coconut meal) in Indonesia is classified by the method of oil extraction used and the form it is sold in. The two primary types are Copra Expeller (mechanically pressed) and Copra Meal (solvent extracted), both widely used as livestock feed due to their high protein and fiber content.

Types by Extraction Method

• Copra Expeller (Coconut Cake): Produced by mechanically pressing the dried coconut kernel. This method leaves a higher residual fat/oil content (typically 6% to 10%), providing more digestible energy for animals.
• Solvent-Extracted Copra Meal: Produced when the remaining copra cake is treated with a solvent (like hexane) to extract nearly all the oil. This results in a very low fat content (1% to 3%) but a slightly higher concentration of protein.

Types by Physical Form

• Coarse / Powder / Chips: The most common form directly after crushing. It consists of ground dried coconut residue with a distinct, mild coconut aroma that enhances livestock palatability.
• Pellets: Often made from copra expellers for easier bulk handling, transportation, and feeding in large-scale operations.
