Sodium bicarbonate is a sodium salt of carbonic acid. 

It has alkalinizing and electrolyte replacement properties. It appears as white lumps or as an odourless, white crystalline powder. The compound also has a bitter or slightly alkaline taste and is slightly soluble in water. It is mostly used as a pH buffering agent, systemic alkalizer, an electrolyte replenisher, or in topical cleansing solutions.
